What does a Producer do?

Without any doubt, this is hands-down the most asked question I've ever been asked. Truthfully, the best Music Producers in the world can do it all, from playing/writing/reading music to marketing your finished product. And everything else in between. I know this is by far the most vague sense of what a Producer actually does, but it's the truth. Fact is, more and more Music Producers are branching out into as many aspects of Music Production as possible.

For example: if you ask your Producer where they will be selling their music, whether it be CD/Vinyl, iTunes, live performances or otherwise, he/she should have an answer. Likewise, if you ask your Producer to step in and play the keyboard or another instrument, they should feel very comfortable doing so(most Producers should know at least one musical instrument fairly well, in my case the Bass guitar).

If you've ever wanted to Produce music, a great way to get your feet wet is by working the sound board as an engineer. You'll learn everything from this position, such as wiring mics to a drum kit, different frequencies at which the instruments and vocals are being recorded, as well as finding that right 'sound' the artist and the Producer are really looking to capture.
